When it comes to marijuana, there are many different strains in this day and age, so it can be hard to know what you are dealing with if you don’t have any education on the matter.
There are hundreds and thousands of different strains, all of which have their own specific effects and properties. Some of them have a more relaxing effect, whereas others will give you a hit of energy.
Some of them have a higher level of the psychoactive compound called THC, while others are higher in CBD, which is the compound in cannabis that has been found to have a lot of potential health benefits.
If you walk into a dispensary, it can be overwhelming to see all of the different options. Therefore, this guide will help you to identify what different cannabis products look like, as well as what different strains of marijuana look like.
First let’s look at the various marijuana products.

Identifying normal weed

There are many different names given to regular marijuana; Whether it is pot, weed, or Mary Jane, this is marijuana in its most basic, unprocessed state. This is the version that is most often seen, and for the most part, people will smoke it in order to get the THC high associated with consuming cannabis.
Weed is made up of the buds and leaves of cannabis plants. The only real form of preparation that is done is drying the buds and leaves. Sometimes, there are certain contaminants that are sprayed on the weed, including other types of psychoactive drugs which can create a stronger effect.
This is often the case when it comes to old marijuana and stuff of poorer quality. Male marijuana plants also do not contain any THC, so other drugs are sprayed on them so that cultivators can sell scam products.
Usually, weed appears as a plant with multiple hues of green, but sometimes containing other colours. It often looks to be somewhat lumpy and it has a distinct smell. This is a smell that is recognizable and fairly pungent, which is why it is easy enough to notice if you are walking by somebody who is smoking weed. It has this smell in its natural state, not just when it is being burned. The scent doesn’t smell like traditional herbs, but some people do mix it with the likes of parsley and oregano.
As soon as you have been exposed to the weed smell, you will recognize it wherever you go. It may not be obvious to the person who is smoking it, but it is a very recognizable smell.

Hashish

Hash is a form of marijuana that is made up of resin from cannabis plants. This resin has been dried and then pressed into a block shape, which creates a solid substance that is somewhat oily in nature.
There are many different names for hash, but they are all the same thing, as there are not really different strains of hashish. Usually, you will find it crumbled, somewhat warmed up and rolled with tobacco. It can be smoked using a variety of tools.
There are different variations of hash in terms of colour; it can come in different brown shades, dirty yellow, and even black. Some of them will look to be shiny, whereas others will be very dull. Sometimes, the texture is very hard and dry, whereas more types will be more flexible and moist.
There is the presence of the weed smell with hash.

Weed cigarettes

A lot of the time, people will smoke weed using cigarettes that have been rolled by hand. They have a variety of names depending on what is inside the cigarette, such as a doobie, spliff, or a joint. You will feel the lumpy nature of the weed through the rolling paper a lot of the time. Some people will mix it with dry tobacco or wetter tobacco, depending on their preferences.

Food that contains marijuana

One of the most popular forms of weed consumption apart from smoking it is ingesting it orally. Often, it is integrated into food, which is referred to as an edible.
Traditionally, edible forms of weed are baked into cookies or brownies. These days though, you will find weed being integrated into all different types of food products, with candy being one of the most popular options.
There is even sometimes weed added to drinks. Milk is usually the most popular option, and it is often hashish oil or hash itself that is added into the milk.
It can be harder to smell the weed when it has been added to food due to the fact that some of the ingredients in the product could hide the pungent smell. You need to be careful with edibles, because the effects take considerably longer to kick in compared to when you smoke weed, so you have to be careful that you don’t exceed your regular dose.

Two main strains

There are two main different types of marijuana strains – indica and sativa. They are made up in different ways when it comes to the likes of their production of resin and in how they are structured. Often times, they have different types of effects on the consumer.
Sativa plants, in general, will produce weed that is more uplifting and provides an energetic high that is useful for creativity, social situations, and for physical exercise. Indica has somewhat of an opposing effect, giving a more relaxing feeling that is also great for people who struggle with their sleep.
It is pretty easy to tell the difference between the two strains when you smoke them, even for a novice smoker. However, the goal is to identify these strains before you have smoked them.

Sativa
Sativa plants are generally grown in hotter climates, such as Mexico and Southeast Asia. They are exposed to a lot of humidity, which means that they adapt to their environment. They generally have narrower leaves and they will grow taller in order to prevent mold from building.
It is harder to tell by looking at the buds as to what strain it may be. Generally, if you believe that you have been given a larger quantity of weed than what you asked for, it is most likely going to be sativa.
Your dispensary isn’t giving you a bit extra – it’s because the buds of sativa weed are not as dense and are somewhat wispier, which gives them the illusion of being a larger quantity when it is in fact the same.
In terms of taste, sativa plants are more pungent and earthier. They smell somewhat flower-like, with a delicate smell which is interesting because it contrasts with their flavor.
Indica
Indica plants are usually grown in drier areas such as in the Middle East. Generally, as a result, the plants will be shorter but bushier and wider compared to sativa. The leaves will be larger so they can maximize the amount of sunlight that they capture.
The flowering period tends to be shorter, and they are not well suited to humid conditions. Indica buds tend to congregate in clusters, and they look like classic dense weed. These buds are more aesthetically pleasing. Generally, with indica, the taste is somewhat sweeter.
